THE 1990s

Georges-Vanier School was built in 1967 and the Public Library in 1994. The library was in use in February, and the official opening was held June 10.

M.K.P. MILL

On November 5, after considerable modernization, the M.K.P. & P. mill was launched in Smooth Rock Falls. Malette's mill was named the safest mid-sized mill in Canada.

1993

SAVING THE ARENA

The arena had slowly deteriorated over the years and was in danger of closing. Richard Philbin, a member of the recreation committee, gave birth to a fundraising campaign to save the arena.

On January 18, the Central Park Committee was started by a group of volunteers headed by Léo Lamothe. The park, located on 6th Street, was named the Liz McCafferty Memorial Park in memory of Elizabeth (Jany) McCafferty, a popular high school teacher.

EARTHQUAKE

On December 6, a small earthquake rocked the area at 5:52 p.m. It measured 3.4 on the Richter scale.

1995

THEATRE FACELIFT

Through a grant and fundraising by the Theatre Committee, the theatre was given a major facelift, which included remodelling the foyer, washrooms and office, and repairing the roof. 200 new seats were installed. The town held a grand opening on October 26.

1996

ÉCOLE SECONDAIRE

École Secondaire vacated the Basil Merchant Education Centre and moved into Georges-Vanier School, which had been newly renovated to accommodate them. The official opening was held November 26.
